WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE?
5 Steps to Clarity, Part 3
Step 3: What makes you unique? What do people you care about come to you for help with? What are you extremely good at and why? Download the freebie: BRANDING CHEAT SHEET.
This is one of my favorite questions to ask my clients! Because most people get a little uncomfortable when you ask them to share what they are good at. And I love helping people push through the uncomfortable, because that’s when the best magic happens, we grow and we shine! If you don’t feel a little uncomfortable, then you’re not doing it right because our survival instinct tries to keep us comfortable, and you can’t grow and thrive when your survival instinct is active.
I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, and into what makes you unique! Because believe it or not, this is a really important part of your brand. A good brand is the personality of a business, and anyone with a good personality has unique aspects that make them special and fun to be around. In the beginning, when you are first starting to build your business, it’s all about what you have to offer. But we all know that none of us is offering something unique, lots of people do the same thing as what we do, what’s unique is US!
When I sat down to start getting clear on my answers to this question, I really struggled with it. It felt wrong to write it, like I was bragging about myself. I felt embarrassed, and it was only ME reading it! Ugh, sometimes it’s hard to get ourselves out of the way so we can continue on the path to our own greatness. Finally I was able to write a little about what I am extremely good at…
I am really good at engaging with other people and passing on the energy I feel to them. I have had strangers come up to me at the grocery store or the dog park and tell me that they just had to thank me because when I smiled at them, they felt happier inside, and they didn’t know why, but they could just feel that I really meant to make them feel happy. I have a way of turning up anyone’s mood when they are feeling down. I have been a source of encouragement and motivation to my friends, siblings and kids. One of my dearest friends who lives hundreds of miles away from me told me once that she could feel my prayers and when they were answered, she called me to say thank you. Another friend of mine told me that I do more than just offer advice on how she could set up her brand, that I actually motivated her to take action on her idea, and she did, she set up her own Etsy store the week after we talked!
Knowing that I have a way with sharing and impressing feelings on others, I was able to position my business’s personality and brand around it. I don’t just offer a designer’s talent for my clients to experience, I offer the experience of someone who can impress feelings and personality upon others through design! I spend the first two sessions of the six sessions I have with my clients only focusing on developing the personality of their brand: What is your mission? What do you stand for? What are your values? Tell me your story? Who do you serve?
And I’m not just a designer who expects you to know these answers, I have that deep conversation with you and guide you through questions, it’s emotional and about the feelings. It’s the way I do things, and maybe the way is not unique, but I know one thing for sure...I am certainly unique. And so are YOU!
I really want to share with you a super cool resource I put together so that you can get some clarity on your own! If you are creating a brand or thinking about starting that soon, download the Branding Cheat Sheet I created for you that is available here!
